EIVIND OPSVIK BIO
Eivind Opsvik, born and bred in Norway but resident in New York City for well over two decades, has developed an utterly individual musical soundprint, one that blends the song-minded composition and creative studio craft of art rock with the virtuosic edge and spontaneity of progressive jazz. The New York Times has said: “Eivind Opsvik has an unusual gift for writing small, poignant pieces of music.”
As bassist-composer, as well as producer and mixing engineer, Opsvik has made five albums with his alt-jazz band Overseas. Time Out New York singled out Overseas IV as one of the “freshest” albums of the year, while DownBeat extolled the record for creating its “own musical universe.” The latest in the series, Overseas V, came out in 2017 via Loyal Label, which is Opsvik’s own imprint.
Opsvik’s other main projects include the instrumental chamber-pop duo Opsvik & Jennings, they have released four full-length albums, and his co-led group with Jacob Sacks; Two Miles a Day (Loyal Label), featuring legendary drummer Paul Motian. Opsvik recently released his art pop solo album; “Emotional Switches” a solo album in its truest sense; it was all conceived, played, recorded, mixed, and produced by Eivind in his basement recording studio.
Opsvik produces and mixes music for other artists, and he has performed internationally in the ensembles of such artists as Anthony Braxton, Okkyung Lee, Tony Malaby, David Binney, Mary Halvorson, Paul Motian, and Nate Wooley. He has collaborated with Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Brian Blade, Craig Taborn, and Skuli Sverrison, among others.
Born in 1973, Opsvik lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two daughters.
